I really wanted to like Hoax Hunters. The title was always intriguing to me and the premise, a group of superpowered people hunting down strange occurrences and disproving them, sounded like it would be fun.For some reason the book didn't grab me. From the introductory chapter where the group tracks down a Youtube video of a 1960's era astronaut suit being piloted by a bunch of crows, this story just seemed like it was lacking. After the group tracks down the astronaut suit, named Murder BTW (get it, a MURDER of crows!?!), he says he wants to join the team. Just like that.
The book seems like it wants to be good, but it just misses getting there. I feel like the mysteries all had a little too convenient of a resolution and that the main villain didn't seem like much of a threat. The one promising villain turns out to be something that can go between worlds but doesn't want to do anything more than play tag.
The art is decent. It kind of gives the book a sort of campy feel. I think it wants to be more of a serious book, but the art keeps it from achieving that goal. The last chapter or two is drawn by a different artist who delivers on the more serious tone. However, this story is the one that is a little lighter than the main story.
I may or may not pick up the second trade. I feel like the series has potential, I'm just not sure that it will ever reach it.

Hoax Hunters Vol 3 Book of Mothman eBook Michael Moreci Steve Seeley TRex Jones Reviews
The simplistic cover on this graphic novel doesn't even give you a glimpse into what the stories could be about, almost demanding that you pick it up and give it a thumbing through. (Or in my case, a few finger swipes across my screen)
Opening this book I can only describe with one sound, "ahhhhhhhhh". You know that sound when something awesome happens and it's shining in all its glory; yeah that sound. The art between the covers is vibrant and brings each page to life as well as adding a nice element to the story line.
If you like the strange and bizarre coupled with graphic novels, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. It's a myriad of oddities all rolled into one. Hoax Hunters is a television reality show produced by a group of people with secret super powers. Much to the theme of Mythbusters and Men in Black, they travel the world trying to debunk the tall tales being told. While the world watches as they merely show people that everything is normal, while at the same time using their powers to cover up the instance. It is the perfect front to cover up all of the reports of the unknown and unnatural from those who shouldn't know of it. Somebodies got to protect us the things of legend right?
The Team is made up of four members, team leader, former FBI agent and second generation Hoax Hunter, Jack Lawson, Regan Tate who has telekinetic powers arising from a childhood incident, A walking zombie, Ken Cadaver (most appropriate), and Murder. Murder was an astronaut who was sucked through a space rift rendering him null and endowing his conscious to ,wait for it....., a murder of crows and apparently they live in his space suit.
The stories are written in such a way as to lack closure to some degree, which I only assume is because they will be reappearing in future editions. Makes sense to me. This is definitely a book for people who think outside the box and like to enjoy the quirky things in life, like myself. It's funny, at times down right comical, but at the same time maintains a level of suspense and action to appease to a broader audience.
This is definitely one I would like a hard copy of to add to my graphic novel collection and would suggest to readers who just know their neighbor is a werewolf.
I've been branching out on my comics and Hoax Hunters look like it could be a great series to follow. I was disappointed though. The storyline didn't grip me as much as I had hoped.
Many people consider the comic book to be one of the only truly original American mediums for entertainment, and this is why. Creepy characters on both sides, reality tv (as a cover up), mystery and intrigue, and ever blurring lines between good and evil make this an instant classic of modern American gothic with a strong sci-fi/fantasy flair (or is that a modern American sci-fi/fantasy with strong gothic flair?)
The concept is excellent. I've only read the first volume, but I'm looking forward to a "Myth Busters" crossover. I'm sure they can make that happen. I'm someone that has some pretty high standards for comic book art and this is up there. It's not perfect, but for its style, it's very good. I would highly recommend picking this up when you have a chance.
I like the idea of a reverse X-files type story, and this book really hit the mark with that. The story lines were entertaining, and the characters were mostly enjoyable with the exception of Jack. He is kind of the typical brooding, mysterious cop-type on a mission, and he is my least favorite of the cast so far. The art is so-so, and I feel like that is one of the things holding this series back from being great.
