By 2084, global warming has proven worse than even the worst-case projections of scientists at the turn of the century. No country and no individual has escaped. Through interviews, this book of oral history captures the effects of the Great Warming on various countries and individuals, as reported in the year 2084.

2084 An Oral History of the Great Warming Single James Powell

The author is either psychic, or thoroughly researched the effects that Global Warming/Climate Change is going to bring to the world.

Written in 2010, Here in 2015 we already see the parallel to the books "America First" (Fascist) party coming to power with a promise to build a wall between Mexico and the U.S. and to export all of the current Mexican immigrants. (Donald Trump, anyone?). The book goes on to detail the massive spying, police and security machine developed and conjoined with Homeland Security to export all of the Mexicans. And of course that once they were exported it didn't stop there, because the troubles that were blamed on the Mexicans (Unemployment, low pay, etc) didn't go away that they started rounding up 'possible second and third generation immigrants'.

Other elements are also coming true now, also (much sooner that the event dates in the book), about Middle East wars spreading, in part because of lack of resources, and the wave of immigrants moving into Europe as a result.

Fascinating (and terrifying) to read again several years after it's publication.

2084 An Oral History of the Great Warming Single James Powell Reviews

This book is around 70% believable -- an interesting speculation on how the world will turn out if we fail to limit emissions from burning greenhouse gases. On the one hand, this account underestimates the likelihood that renewable energy will spread dramatically lessening some of the impacts of climate change. On the other, the damage from melting and rising sea levels seems to be underestimated. Predicting impacts of massive numbers of people escaping the ravages of a hotter climate is certainly tough, but the collapse of our industrial civilization seems like an extreme outcome. Of course it is anyone's guess how things will turn out, but I simply cannot see falling back to technology prior to the industrial revolution. Much food for thought here.
This is a very sobering account of what the future could look like if the world doesn't wake up and do something about global warming (especially the republicans in politics in the US, which is mentioned in the book). When people and corporations make decisions based on short-term profit, instead of long-term consequences, the situations in the book result.

These stories are told in a fashion similar to, "World War Z", with the author interviewing various people from around the world for first-hand accounts of the effects of global warming. Some of these accounts are truly terrifying. People die. Billions of people died. At one point, someone makes an off-hand comment that the current population is 3 billion. The comment is never addressed, but when you realize the population today is 7 billion (and rising), the full effect of the disaster hits you in the gut--hard.

I wish the members of congress would read this book, especially those who claim global warming is a hoax or that God will save the planet. I don't know if these people are just stupid, corrupt, or truly don't believe in climate change. I think the first two are the most likely scenarios. When money is at stake--lots of money--corrupt people do stupid things in their own self-interest. Throughout the world, republicans in the US are pretty much the only ones who don't admit to believing in climate change although the proof is staring them in the face. Unfortunately, they also have a lot of power. If a republican President is elected, we can all kiss the world goodbye.

Our descendants (if any survive) will hate us (as they do in the book) for not doing anything to address this problem. It has been well-known for decades when there was still time for us to do something to stop it. We didn't. And this book may address the consequences of this inaction perfectly. Or it could be worse.
This work of fiction is a speculative “future history” of what the next few decades could be like if we as a species continue our destructive ways. (One scary recognition is that many of the dire consequences projected here are already in progress.) I would like to have seen an appendix with “What We Can Do” today, steps we can take, to forestall or prevent these predicted outcomes. I realize those resources or programs are identified elsewhere, but not giving some of the best ones here was a missed opportunity.
